Organizing Tips for Kids Rooms

Bookmark and Share

Kids rooms can be a disaster area if they are not kept organized. It is important to get kids started early with learning how to be organized. If your kids are older, it can still be done but may take more time and patience on your part. Here are some organizing tips for kids rooms that can help.

Get the Kids Involved
If you want the kids room to stay organized, they have to be involved in the process of getting it organized. Organizing tips for kids rooms are almost sure to fail if you miss this critical step. How you get them involved will depend on their age. For younger kids, you will need to decide how to organize the room and then have them help put things where they belong. You will need to show them where things go and help them to remember where to put their things. With older kids, get them involved in deciding how they want their room organized. Some kids will come up with great ideas on their own. With others you will need to give them options. The more engaged they are in the process, the more likely they will be to keep the room organized.

Appropriate Organizing Solutions
When using organizing tips for kids rooms, having a solution that is appropriate for the child’s age is important. It is going to be hard to get a toddler to neatly stack their toys on shelves. A better approach for this age is medium sized bins. Try not to get bins that are too big or deep because otherwise they may empty the entire bin to get to a favorite toy. If they are old enough to recognize pictures, you can even try labeling what goes into the different bins with pictures like cars for the car bin, animals for the animal bin, and so on. For older kids, a combination of bins and shelves can work well for organizing toys. Bins and shelves can be labeled with what goes on them or in them so it is easy for your child to put things back where they belong.

Clothing Organization
An important part of organizing tips for kids rooms is getting clothing under control. Since kids go through clothing quickly, it is important to do at least a yearly purging of clothes that no longer fit. So that the clothes do not end up taking space somewhere else, donate them to charity or see if a consignment store in your area would be willing to sell them for you. Organize clothes by season so your kids don’t try to wear shorts and a t-shirt when it is 20 degrees outside. A bin at the top of the closet with out of season clothes will keep those clothes out of sight. Organizing by type in a kids closet is also helpful so that shirts are in one spot, pants in another, jackets in another, and so on. This makes it easier for the kids to find what they are looking for.
