Methods to Declutter Your Home

Deciding to declutter your home is a big step and one that will require time and commitment. No matter what method you choose to use, you should have a plan for how you want the room organized once you get rid of the clutter. Having an end goal like this in mind can help keep you focused and on track. Here are a few different techniques you can try to declutter your home.

Room by Room
In this technique, you take the time to declutter and organize each room separately. If your time is limited to brief sections during a week, this technique can work well for you. The trick will be to divide each room into sections that you can declutter and organize in one small block of time. The problem with using this method to declutter your home is that you sometimes end up keeping things that you should not. Whenever you are organizing it is good to think about the last time that you used something and the likelihood of you using it again. Try not to spend too much time in any room of your home and work on making decisions to keep or get rid of something quickly.

Massive Purge
The way you do this is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: you purge every room in your home altogether. If you know that you are going to take too long in each room or save too many things if you give yourself a lot of time, this method will likely work better for you. You will need to make quick decisions about everything in each room. Have a centralized throw and donate pile in your home or have bins that you take with you into each room as you tackle it. If you are going to use this method to declutter your home, you will need to devote at least a weekend to the project. The goal is to move through the entire house in as short of a timeframe as possible. You will go through each room and organize it after you have finished purging the clutter.

Tackle the Worst Areas
Taking the time to tackle the worst areas of your home first is a good method if you need to get some immediate results. Getting these areas cleaned up will help you feel better about your home and can help encourage you to do more. A problem that you might run into when you use this technique to declutter your home is getting frustrated with these rooms or not progressing as quickly as you would like. Resist the urge to give up and just keep working at it. Enlist help to get it done more quickly if that will help you stick to your commitment.
