A clean and organized home can make your home into the haven
that you want it to be. When my home is clean and organized,
I feel better about myself and have more energy to do
things. So how can you get there? Here are some simple
techniques for cleaning and organizing your home.
Bite-Sized Chunks
When I try to clean or organize my home all at once, I
usually end up feeling overwhelmed before I even start. That
is why it is easier for me to tackle one room at a time.
Start by clearing out things from the room or an area of the
room. Clear out items you no longer want or need. Then set
to work cleaning and organizing one area at a time. If it is
a bedroom, empty items out of the dresser, get rid of things
that you don’t want or don’t fit, clean the dresser, and
organize the items as you put them back into it. Some days
you won’t have time to do an entire room. With this
approach, you can just work on certain sections of it at a
time.
A Schedule
Setup a weekly schedule for cleaning and organizing your
home. Maybe you clean and organize the bathrooms on Mondays.
Tuesdays you tackle the kitchen. Sit down and plan out the
schedule that best fits with your life and commitments. Be
flexible each week as different events come up that make
schedule changes necessary. Your schedule should include how
much time you are willing to devote to cleaning and
organizing that area.
Job List
If you have a family or live with others, having a job list
is helpful. On this list are all of the cleaning and
organizing chores for your home each day, week, and month.
Daily tasks are things like cleaning up the dishes after
meals, setting the table, picking up toys, getting and
sorting the mail, feeding the pet. Weekly chores will be
things like taking out the trash, dusting, cleaning
bathrooms, sweeping and mopping the kitchen. Make a list of
each chore. Then have a family meeting where you discuss the
chores that need to be done and decide on how the chores
will be divided up for each day, week, and month. Post the
list to the refrigerator or another central area in the home
so that everyone is clear on their chores. Decide on
consequences if someone does not complete their chores. It
might be no allowance for the week or extra chores next
week.
Cleaning and organizing your home takes time each day and
each week. You will need to make the time to get it looking
how you want it to look.
